Why switch to Windows 10? Why not open source?
While it is good to have Windows 10, I doubt the stability of this OS. I have used Windows 8 and 10 only recently on one of my machines and its (Windows 10) lack of stability is really an issue for me unlike the experience on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1. And based on tech forums and articles I'm reading, I am not alone. Example here
Although Windows 7 has been granted a 2 year extension on the shelf (Microsoft's sales life cycle), the move has been on snail pace for many users from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
I would rather switch to a free open source alternative that can do pretty much better than Windows 10, Linux Mint. Free, no licence, no activation required, no fancy metro styles, but its simplicity and elegance cannot be matched.
Virus, adware, malware always target commercial proprietary software, that is why you will never run short of finding Microsft OS cracks, pirated Microsoft OS, even Windows 10. These increase chances of malware and viruses reproducing.
I'm also finding that a lot of friends and family buying laptops at local IT shops pre-installed with OEM system builder editions (which is cheap). I found this in POM and now here in Madang. Do I need to explain why it is cheap? because its unregistered!!! There you go... which means limited support and updates won't work. They (the local IT shops) won't tell you this...only on rare occasions.
You want a registered OS, buy the full retail version which of course will be expensive. That is why you see laptops going up to around 2-3 grand.
The bottom line is, I do like Microsoft (I'm using a Windows 7 machine to write this) but I'm a big fan and advocate of open source software. When your pocket starts to have holes, consider trying open source software.
